Robert Massey - Banff-based storyteller and creative

Robert Massey is an award-winning photographer, director and creative leader based in Banff, Canada. He has been telling stories professionally for nearly two decades, beginning in photojournalism before moving into tourism, commercial photography, filmmaking and creative production.

Raised in Calgary, Canada, on the doorstep of the Canadian Rockies, Robert has spent most of his life hiking, camping, swimming and exploring the landscapes around him. From covering ground on a mountain bike to lugging camera gear to a mountaintop for sunrise, he is always happy when a project calls for sturdy shoes, questionable weather and a slightly unreasonable call time.

Robert’s work is centred on stories and their power to create genuine connections between people. He is drawn to whatever gives a person, place or brand its character, and likes to dig until he finds the magic at its centre and the most compelling way to bring it to life. Rather than arriving with a predetermined idea of how something should look or feel, Robert begins by observing what is actually there and builds the creative approach from what he finds.

Depending on the project, he can develop the initial idea and creative direction, direct the production, create the photography or film, or join a larger creative team to help realize its vision.

At the heart of Robert’s approach is a belief that the best creative work comes from collaboration. He values candour, curiosity and a shared commitment to making the work stronger, regardless of whose idea gets it there. The best work rarely comes from one person dictating every decision. It comes from bringing great people together around a shared vision to create something none of them could have made alone.
